Post Program: Shiozawa Workshop
"Steps to Connecting Global Experiential Learning"

    While observing nature and experiential programs in Japan on Feb 16th and 17th, guest educators from overseas will carry out a workshop in Shiozawa, Niigata Prefecture, focusing on the development of joint projects. This will be an opportunity to share ideas and interact with participating Japanese people.

    Depart Tokyo for Niigata Prefecture (Bus)
    19:00 Arrival in Tochikubo, Shiozawa, Niigata Prefecture
    Feb 16th
    8:00
    Walk through Tochikubo community. Walk to local shrine, school, forest and rice paddies. If possible, we may visit a traditional Japanese home to see kitchen, pickling shed, snow melting, heating, bath, and other facets of daily living.
    11:00 Mochi Rice Pounding, Lunch
    12:00 Registration
    13:00 Start of workshop
    Self-introductions and ice breaking activity. Outdoor experiential learning workshops (to be carried out by 2 or 3 participants)
    ** (Local children may join us after school)
    18:00 Bath, Dinner
    20:00 Discussion (Introductions of guest educator activities followed by discussion about unique characteristics of experienced-based programs worldwide)
    ** (Children will have free time)
    Feb 17th

    Breakfast
    9:00 Braiding rope with rice straw (facilitated by local instructors)
    11:00 Rice-ball (onigiri) making with Tochikubo grown rice
    13:00 Closing Discussion
    After two days of experiences and interaction in Tochikubo, educators will discuss the possibility of creating programs that connect experiential activities that make use of local characteristics on a continual basis. Discussion will be in small groups and aim to create several concrete projects.
    (Children may watch ski competition and participate in winter games of the local elementary school.)

    19:00 Open Reception:
    Community members, including children who remember WSN international guests from last year, will be invited for an open reception. Introductions of music, song, dance, etc. from each visiting region will be highly appreciated. Scottish bagpipes may be performed by Dr Nicol.
