Wisdom Report 001

Self Introduction from Greg

My name is Gregory Michel, but my friends call me Greg. You are all going to be my partners in this adventure so please call me Greg.

I am from Clinton, a small countryside village in New York State, USA, but I was born in Boston, lived ten years in Houston, and am now living in Tokyo.

Eight years ago was my first visit to Japan. A high school teacher of mine who had traveled to Japan inspired me to come to Japan as an exchange student. He told me about Japan's low crime-rate, and about the diligent yet cheerful students he met. A simple curiosity about Japan and wanting to see the world from a new perspective influence me to spend a year in Sapporo, Hokkaido (the northernmost island of Japan) as a high school exchange student.

I have now lived half of my after-high school years in Japan. Living here has effected everything from my taste in food, to how I see the world, to how I feel about the environment. It also led me to this project that we are about to begin.

Exploration for Wisdom

Exploration for Wisdom starts on September 17th. To share in adventure with all of you I will walk from Utoro, Hokkaido (the northernmost island of Japan) to Tokyo. For four months and 1700 kilometers, I will wipe the sweat off of my brow and patch the blisters on my feet, but more importantly, I will be in contact with all of you. While walking, I will send you all messages using a computer and portable phone, but we will all share ideas about the wisdom we find in our own communities.

I want to know what you all think about wisdom. Is wisdom something our grandmothers and grandfathers possess? Is it something for the future? Could it be in your daily routine? Start thinking about what "wisdom" is for you, and let's help each other along the way. I'll give you all some hints and am waiting for hints from all of you too.

This project is a big challenge. It is our challenge to discover the treasures in our own areas, share our findings with our friends worldwide, debate and work together to make positive changes in the world.

Only one week to departure! So put on your "wisdom-caps" and get ready for your own adventure into the past, present, and future of Japan.
