Individuals can change the world
Students give individual presentations. 99.12.10/ Temperature: 7C/ Weather: Partly cloudy/ Wind Direction: NW
Current Location: Tochio 37 46 12 N 139 12 55 E
Distance Traveled: 0 km (Childrens' Point)Through my short encounter with the students of Kuzumaki I realized the importance of each of us as individuals to find our own concern for and interest in the environment.
The Kuzumaki Earth Rangers, of Kuzumaki Elementary School, have been studying various environmental issues as a group for some time now. Just recently they have begun independent environmental studies. Each of the students has chosen a topic of their own interest and someone to whom they want to share their results with. Today I was invited to watch some of the students rehearse their presentations.
Students give individual presentations. I listened to five different presentations. Each young environmentalist explained what and why he or she studied as well as how people can help to improve the environment for the future. Topics ranged from recycled paper, making soap from used cooking oil, recycled plastic bottles and soap less sponges. Nervous as my teachers may have been, they each had items for observers to see and feel, some prepared quiz questions, picture stories and posters, and they all spoke from their own individual interests and experiences.
For almost three months now I have been searching for wisdom. I am beginning to see that the people I encounter who seem clever enough to make a difference for our environment are generally those who have followed their individual concerns and attempted to articulate their worries to others through various means. Some have created groups to protect the environment, others merely chat with their neighbors on the way to take out the trash, but they all seem to have paid close attention to current facts and conditions of their surrounding community and environment, and they are able to articulate their ideas. The ability to persuade people about the importance of utilizing wisdom and protecting our environment is an indispensable tool for our future.
We have shared quite a bit about group studies we conducted. As individuals what environmental issues interest you most? Why?
I am glad to see that the Earth Rangers are off to an early start discovering their interests as well as concerns. I anxiously wait to hear about the results of their endeavors.
